The flagbearer balloting for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took place in Accra on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, setting the stage for a highly anticipated delegates conference scheduled for November 4.

The event saw prominent party members, including Ken Agyapong and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, make their selections, sparking excitement and anticipation within the party and across the nation.

Kennedy Agyapong, the vocal Member of Parliament for Assin Central, emerged as the first pick, followed closely by the current Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured the second slot.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former Minister for Agriculture, secured the third slot and Francis Addai Nimo, the former MP for Mampong, clinched the fourth position. This quartet of contenders signifies a diverse range of experiences and ideologies within the party.

The flagbearer balloting process was conducted under the supervision of the party’s national election committee, ensuring a fair and transparent procedure. With the stage now set, the NPP’s delegates conference on November 4 will determine the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

The NPP’s four-horse race features strong contenders, with Ken Agyapong, Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Akoto at the forefront. Notably, Alan Kyeremateng withdrew from the race following the Special Delegates Conference, adding an element of suspense to the contest.

Ken Agyapong, known for his outspoken criticism of the government, has pledged to usher in change if elected as the party’s flagbearer. Dr. Bawumia, the incumbent Vice President, enjoys popularity within the party’s intellectual circles and is considered a safe choice. Dr. Akoto, a former Minister of Agriculture and technocrat, brings his unique perspective to the race.

The NPP, currently in power since 2017, seeks to secure a third consecutive term in the 2024 general elections. Facing a robust challenge from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Mahama, the 2024 elections promise to be closely contested.
