The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revealed its intention to hold discussions with Cynthia Morrison, the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, after her surprise announcement to contest the Agona West seat as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

According to NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party is committed to fostering unity and achieving its goal of “breaking the eight,” a phrase symbolizing its aspiration to secure a third consecutive term in office, thereby surpassing the traditional two-term limit. By engaging with Cynthia Morrison, the NPP aims to address her decision and potentially reunite her with the party’s fold.

Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West, has announced her decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming parliamentary election. This move comes after she was unsuccessful in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal primaries. Speaking directly to her constituents, Morrison declared, “With God’s blessing, I will be contesting the parliamentary seat as an independent candidate. This decision is not driven by allegiance to the NDC or NPP, but rather by my unwavering commitment to the progress and development of Agona West.” By distancing herself from party affiliations, Morrison emphasizes her focus on serving the people and advancing the constituency’s interests.

However, Justin Kodua has explained the party will take proactive steps to engage with those considering independent runs. The primary goal is to bring everyone back into the fold and ensure unity within the party. Specifically, the party leadership will continue to hold discussions with Cynthia Morrison, aiming to address her concerns and persuade her to rejoin the party’s ranks. By doing so, the NPP seeks to maintain a united front and bolster its chances of success in the upcoming election.
