The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to realign his priorities with what it describes as the core concerns of Ghanaians, particularly on issues relating to LGBTQ matters.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, April 7 at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, urged the President to reflect the will of the people in his policy direction.
Rev. Fordjour argued that a significant majority of Ghanaians expect stronger action on LGBTQ-related issues, citing survey findings he said show widespread public support for legislation.
He maintained that national leadership must align with what he described as prevailing societal values and expectations.
He further criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing it of shifting its stance after gaining power.
He claimed the party capitalised on public sentiment during the election period but has since failed to prioritise those same concerns.
According to him, the government has deprioritised what he termed “genuine moral concerns” of citizens, choosing instead what he described as political convenience.
Rev. Fordjour also called on President Mahama to fulfil his earlier promise to introduce a government-sponsored bill to address LGBTQ issues comprehensively.
He stressed that such commitments, made to religious leaders and the public, must be honoured.
He insisted that Ghana’s core challenges and societal expectations remain unchanged, adding that the government must act decisively to meet those expectations.
