The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not intervene on behalf of any individual arrested by the police for their alleged roles in the disturbances that marred a parliamentary primary in Walewale. The primary election, contested by incumbent MP Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu and Dr. Kabiru Mahama, was nullified by the Electoral Commission after ballot papers were snatched, disrupting the sorting and counting process.

Following the incident, the police have taken one person into custody. The NPP has made it clear that it will not interfere in the matter, allowing the law to take its course.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday September 10 at the party’s headquarters,Accra, Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), publicly expressed the party’s support for the Police and emphasized that individuals found responsible for disrupting the electoral process would be held accountable under the law. He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and internal democracy, while prioritizing peace and stability.

In a related development, the National Executive Committee is scheduled to convene on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, to discuss and resolve the situation.

Frimpong Kodua assured that the meeting will yield a decision aimed at unifying the party in the constituency, addressing outstanding issues, and ensuring the NPP retains its seat in Walewale. This decision will be made ahead of the looming deadline for closed-door nominations on Friday, paving the way for a cohesive approach to the elections.
