The Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) of Ghana has issued a warning to student nurses, midwives, and practitioners over what it describes as unprofessional conduct on social media.

In a statement issued by the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana, the Council expressed concern about a growing number of disturbing online publications and videos involving trainees, nurses, and midwives that portray behavior deemed unprofessional and contrary to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct governing the profession.

According to the statement, the Council is particularly alarmed by the misuse of nursing and midwifery uniforms in creating unauthorized social media content, the use of abusive or derogatory language directed at leadership and stakeholders, and the sharing of misleading or unverified health information under the guise of professional advice.

“The Council wishes to remind all students and practitioners that the nursing and midwifery professions are grounded in the principles of integrity, respect, professionalism, and ethical responsibility. Any conduct that undermines these values not only tarnishes the image of the profession but also erodes public trust in the healthcare system,” the statement emphasized.

The Council further reiterated that it holds the exclusive mandate to accredit institutions and license individuals to practice as Nurse Assistants, Nurses, and Midwives in Ghana.

It cautioned that no person or group is permitted to provide public education or professional guidance in the name of the Council without prior approval or accreditation.

All students and practitioners have therefore been cautioned to refrain from any form of unprofessional behavior, especially on social media platforms. The Council warned that it would not hesitate to impose disciplinary measures, including suspension or revocation of licenses, against individuals found guilty of breaching the professional code of conduct.

The N&MC also urged all stakeholders to uphold the dignity and sanctity of the nursing and midwifery professions and to report any form of misconduct to the Council for appropriate action.
