The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, has been ordered by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to refund GH¢113,000 to the state within 90 days.
This directive stems from the hospital’s failure to recover funds from staff whose negligence led to two separate judgment debts. One incident involved the death of a patient due to medication overdose, while the other concerned a mix-up of mortal remains that resulted in the wrongful burial and subsequent exhumation of a body.
During a PAC hearing, Ranking Member Samuel Atta-Mills pressed Dr. Adam on whether the hospital had complied with earlier recommendations to retrieve the funds from the responsible officers and deposit them into the Auditor General’s Recoveries Account at the Bank of Ghana.
Dr. Adam admitted that no recovery had been made, prompting a firm response from Atta-Mills:
“Our Chief Executive Officer, we give you 90 days to pay this 113,000.”
PAC’s decision highlights its commitment to enforcing accountability in public institutions and ensuring that financial losses caused by administrative lapses are swiftly addressed.
