PHOTOS: Residents of Madina-Adenta embark on demo despite govt assurance to complete footbridges

Residents of Madina-Adenta on Monday morning embarked on a peaceful demonstration. The demonstration forms part of measures to put pressure on government to complete the six footbridges on the Madina- Adenta- Aburi Highway.

Happy FM’s Reporter Ibrahim Zibrilla who is monitoring the demonstration reports that over 300 protesters have hit the streets. They began at West Africa Senior High School – the deadly site where the last victim, a teenage student of the school died last Thursday, moved to the SDA junction and turned back to Adenta Barrier with over 30 police officers are walking with the ‘peaceful’ demonstrators.

The demonstration comes on the back of the carnage on the Highway sparking chaos and roadblocks by the residents. According to the Ghana Police Service, 24 people have been killed on the road with 164 others sustaining injuries.

A statement from the Inter-Ministerial Committee on road safety issued last Thursday said, government regretted the deaths of residents who had been killed by speeding vehicles.

The statement further said work had already been ongoing in recent weeks to address the situation and that procurement processes were now near completion.
