The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has officially arrested 16 individuals for forcibly invading the studios of UTV during a live broadcast of the “United Showbiz” Show on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

The invasion, orchestrated by unidentified individuals described as “thugs,” disrupted the broadcast of the show as a result of a series of events that have been unfolding in recent weeks.

The police action came in response to a complaint filed by the Despite Media Group and the Ministry of Information. Both organizations alleged that certain individuals had illegally entered the UTV studios, causing chaos and threatening the safety of staff and guests.

The background of the incident stems from an earlier controversy involving musician and political activist A-plus, who tore a letter from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) directing UTV to refrain from discussing politics on the “United Showbiz” program.

The group that invaded the studio claimed to be members of the NPP’s youth wing and demanded an apology from A-plus, alleging that he had insulted the President and Vice President.

Globally renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Sonnie Badu, who was scheduled to be a guest on the show, expressed his shock at the events that transpired. He reported witnessing approximately 50 individuals invading the premises, attacking staff and producers, and causing chaos.

Mr. Logic and Vida Adutwumwaa, who were panelists on the “United Showbiz” program, recounted their harrowing experiences during the invasion. They had to take refuge under a table in the control room and makeup room, respectively, as the thugs wreaked havoc within the studio.

The 16 individuals arrested in connection with the invasion are currently assisting the police with their investigations. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of media personnel and the need to maintain order during live broadcasts in Ghana.

The police have assured the public that they are committed to thoroughly investigating the matter and ensuring that those responsible for the invasion face the full force of the law. The incident has also sparked discussions about the importance of freedom of speech and responsible media coverage in the country’s political landscape.
