A coalition of political parties in Ghana has announced plans to stage a nationwide protest on Monday, May 5, 2025, in response to what they describe as the unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice and the termination of public appointments.

The demonstration is being organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

In a joint statement issued on Friday, April 25, the political parties condemned what they termed a dangerous assault on Ghana’s judiciary and constitutional order. The parties claim the suspension of the Chief Justice is politically motivated and represents a broader agenda by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to erode judicial independence and capture key constitutional institutions.

“This reckless assault on the independence of the judiciary is not just an attack on one individual but a dangerous affront to the very Constitution that binds our democracy together,” the statement read.

It warned that history is repeating itself, referencing a failed 2010 attempt by the NDC to remove then-Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.

The parties further allege that intelligence from political circles indicates an orchestrated plan to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and her deputies, in a bid to install loyalist judges and compromise the judiciary. They suspect this is part of a broader strategy to legitimize President John Mahama’s potential third-term bid in 2028 by altering constitutional interpretations.

The statement also addressed what it called the “unlawful termination” of appointments of public servants, accusing the Mahama-led administration of pursuing political vengeance at the expense of livelihoods and national unity.

They called on religious groups, civil society, and ordinary Ghanaians to join the protest on May 5, 2025
