President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has applauded the minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election as the new Commonwealth Secretary-General.

Her appointment is seen as a significant milestone in enhancing Ghana’s international reputation and diplomatic legacy.

At a ceremony held to welcome her from the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, the President highlighted her achievements and reaffirmed the country’s full support as she assumes her new role. He acknowledged her outstanding service as Foreign Minister, Chairperson of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, and in other key international assignments.

He urged Ghanaians to rally behind her and support her efforts to represent the nation effectively on the world stage. He noted that her leadership offers an opportunity for Ghana to assert its global influence, drawing comparisons to the legacy of the late Kofi Annan, who served as UN Secretary-General.

Ayorkor Botchwey’s historic appointment as the first African woman to head the Commonwealth underscores Ghana’s rising diplomatic influence. She will officially take office on April 1, 2025, succeeding Patricia Scotland.
