President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s commitment to ensuring social protection benefits for all labor migrants from Ghana working in other countries.

In his New Year’s engagement with the diplomatic corps, the President shared the importance of strengthening ties with the Ghanaian diaspora. “I want to reaffirm our commitment to social development and acknowledge that our diaspora remains an invaluable asset to our nation,” he said.

Mahama noted that his administration has initiated productive discussions with key stakeholders and partner states to ensure smooth migration processes, as well as proper security and social protection benefits for labor migrants. “Migration, if properly managed, can benefit migrant workers, their communities, and their countries of destination and origin. However, migrant workers are often at risk of exploitation, abuse, and exclusion, with limited access to social protection benefits,” he stated.

As part of efforts by the Mahama-led government, the President revealed that Ghana has reached the final stage of bilateral labor agreements with key partners to safeguard vulnerable labor migrants and promote ethical recruitment.

Additionally, Mahama announced the implementation of the Ghana Labor Export Program, which will allow skilled Ghanaian workers to take up employment abroad for specified periods, contributing their expertise to global development.
