President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to improving Ghana’s healthcare system and reducing the cost of treating chronic illnesses.

During his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Central Region on February 6, he emphasized the need for significant healthcare advancements and introduced plans for the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, commonly known as Mahama Cares.

This initiative he noted aims to provide financial assistance to individuals suffering from chronic health conditions such as kidney and liver diseases, high blood pressure, and cardiac ailments. President Mahama stressed the importance of prioritizing healthcare by continuously upgrading hospitals and enhancing all levels of the healthcare system. The fund is expected to help alleviate the financial burden of medical treatment for affected individuals.

In addition, he announced plans to remove the cap on the National Health Insurance Levy, ensuring that the entire levy amount is allocated to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

This adjustment according to him is intended to enable the NHIA to cover the cost of treatments provided to National Health Insurance cardholders at healthcare facilities across the country.
