The Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Prof. Kwasi Prempeh, has expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for appointing him as Chair of the Constitutional Review Committee.

In a Facebook post, Prof. Prempeh described the appointment as a bold and statesmanlike move, stating that it reflects President Mahama’s commitment to advancing constitutional reform. He stressed the inclusive composition of the committee as a signal of good faith in resetting Ghana’s governance framework.

Prof. Prempeh, a non-NDC member and a known critic of Mahama’s previous administration, emphasized his readiness to prioritize national interest in his role. He assured Ghanaians that he and the committee would work diligently within their mandate to drive reforms aimed at fostering good governance and inclusive development.

“Interestingly, the last time I met or talked with H.E. President Mahama was 2019 in Harare, Zimbabwe, when, as former president, he headed a Commonwealth delegation to monitor the general elections in that country and I was there as an election observer. I have not seen or talked with him directly since. 😋I was informed earlier of his intentions regarding my appointment and the committee by the Attorney General-designate Dr. Dominic Ayine. I am humbled,” he wrote.

He urged Ghanaians to focus on the significant issues at hand and support the constitutional reform process.

“Note: I have not quit my day job at CDD. This is a “responsibility” appointment, not a “reward” appointment. 😋So don’t salivate or get green-eyed; prayers kɛkɛ because ɛyɛ ɛdwuma nkoaa! 🙏🏾 No contracts or galamsey concessions. 🤣😆,” he added.

Prof. Kwasi Prempeh together with Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Prof. Kwame Karikari, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, Dr. Godwin Djokoto, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, Dr. Esi Ansah, and Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya have been tasked with identifying gaps in the implementation of previous constitutional reforms, including those by the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee, engaging stakeholders for input, and proposing actionable recommendations to address governance challenges.
