Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye has condemned the Minority’s demand to unseat four MPs contesting the December polls as independent candidates.

The Minority seeks vacant declarations for Agona West MP Cynthia Morrison, Suhum MP Kwadwo Asante and Amenfi Central MP Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah. Additionally, they argue Fomena’s seat should be vacated since the Independent MP will contest under the NPP banner in 2024.

However, Prof. Oquaye asserts the NDC lacks grounds to motion against opposing party members. Notably, Prof. Oquaye previously removed an NPP MP under similar circumstances four years ago. Current Speaker Alban Bagbin deferred ruling on the Minority’s petition, initiated by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu.

The petition invokes Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution, requiring MPs to vacate their seats if they abandon their original party or remain as independent. Prof. Oquaye’s stance contradicts the Minority’s interpretation, fueling debate on parliamentary membership and party allegiance.
