The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, has called on media personnel to maintain neutrality and hold government officials accountable.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Mr. Ahiagbah addressed concern about the recent civilian-military clash in Obuasi. He criticized some journalists in Ghana for allowing partisanship to influence their work, noting that this bias prevents them from speaking out when the political parties they support engage in wrongdoing.

He emphasized that journalists, as the “fourth arm of government,” are obligated by the 1992 Constitution to hold politicians accountable and serve as watchdogs for the public interest. However, he expressed concern that partisan politics has compromised their efficiency, leading them to prioritize political allegiance over truth and fairness.

Mr. Ahiagbah urged journalists to exercise caution in their duties, speak the truth, and address issues objectively. He stressed that media impartiality is essential for holding governments accountable, maintaining public trust, and safeguarding the country’s democratic integrity.
