Deputy Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to improving Ghana’s road infrastructure, acknowledging the backlog of unpaved roads across the country.

He emphasized the need to improve Ghana’s road network, acknowledging the significant number of unpaved roads across the country.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 26, Mr. Suhuyini admitted that while the previous government made significant progress in road construction, a substantial number of roads remain unattended.

“I think it is fair to say that the previous government did a chunk of the roads, and that is not in doubt. Like many other governments in the past, they have contributed to road development, but a lot more is left undone,” he stated.

He noted that Ghana currently has 134,000 kilometers of road networks, but 72% of them remain unpaved, making road construction a pressing national issue.

The high percentage of unpaved roads, he explained, underscores why many Members of Parliament frequently raise concerns about road projects in their constituencies.

He assured the committee that he and his minister would work diligently to mobilize the necessary resources to address the road infrastructure deficit.

“I have no doubt in the commitment and hard work of my minister. We will leverage the needed resources to fix as many of these roads as possible,” he emphasized.
