Rwanda’s Parliament has condemned a European Parliament resolution calling for the release of opposition figure Victoire Ingabire and a review of EU aid to Kigali, labeling it “neocolonial interference.”
In a joint statement on September 15, both chambers of the legislature defended Rwanda’s sovereignty and judicial independence.
“No amount of colonial-style resolutions can change that reality. Those days are long gone,” said Foreign Minister Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe.
The resolution, passed in Brussels, reignites tensions over human rights and political space in Rwanda, with EU lawmakers warning of possible aid suspensions.
Rwandan MPs insist the legal process against Ingabire is legitimate and accuse the EU of undermining national institutions.
