Salaga youth rampage over new regional capital; 7 arrested

Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the burning of the Salaga South New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Office on Tuesday February 12, 2019.

The youth pulled down an undisclosed number of party bill boards in the town.

Yesterday, the youth of Salaga went on rampage after the declaration of Damango as the capital of the neew Savannah Region by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Damango can be found in the West Gonja District with seat of the Overlord of Gonjaland Yagbon-Wura Tuntumba Bor-Esa Jakpa II.

The President announced the new region and its capital inclusive of the six (6) new regions at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday during the passing of the CI to make them autonomous.

The youth had indicated their next point of attack was the office of the Municipal Assembly after which they promise to take over the residence of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mohammed Tamimu, but that was truncated by the swift move of the East Gonja Police Command.

The arrest was contained in a police report signed by the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yussif Mohammed Tanko.
“The suspects were quickly identified and picked up in the early hours of Wednesday February 13 upon intelligence to assist in investigations”, the report said.

DSP Mohammed Tanko, however, assured residents of adequate security police indicating that calm has been restored. He called on the general public to assist the police with relevant information to aid in their investigations.
