SDA Church urges members to prioritize Sabbath observance over Saturday voting

The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the sanctity of the Sabbath while acknowledging the civic responsibility of its members to participate in the democratic process. They’ve encouraged their members to engage in civic activities, but their congregation meetings, whether on Saturday or any other day, should not be used as a platform for political debates, endorsements of political parties, or campaign activities. Instead, the church’s focus during Sabbath gatherings should remain on worship, spiritual growth, and fellowship.

In a statement issued by the South Ghana Conference and Northern Ghana Union Conference of the church, the leadership has urged its members to prayerfully consider their decisions regarding voting on Saturday, December 7, 2024, in light of our deeply held beliefs about the Sabbath’s sanctity. The church’s official position, consistent with their longstanding conviction, is to avoid engaging in non-religious activities, including voting, on the Sabbath.

The Adventist Church has consistently advocated for an alternative election date to accommodate their members’ religious observance, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of faith, can fully participate in the democratic process.

They wish to reiterate their longstanding conviction that voting on Saturday, the Sabbath of the Lord is not in alignment with their religious beliefs.
