A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, Shamima Muslim has emphasized the importance of population management and equitable development to address socio-economic challenges, particularly in northern Ghana.

She pointed out that unemployment and underdevelopment are critical issues in many communities especially up north and stressed the need to empower young people and decentralize resources to promote economic growth in underserved areas.

She noted that although Africa is projected to have the youngest population globally within the next few decades, this demographic potential could become a challenge if not properly managed. Many young people are currently not engaged in education, employment, or skills training, leaving them vulnerable to negative influences, including extremism.

She observed that decentralization, which was intended to ensure even development across all regions, has not fully achieved its goal. She stressed that equitable growth is essential to prevent future challenges, highlighting the need for rural areas to become centers of economic activity.

Drawing from her experiences visiting remote communities, Shamima identified a lack of infrastructure and social services as contributing factors to high birth rates. She explained that the absence of schools, jobs, and recreational activities often leaves residents with few options, leading to increased childbearing.

She called for policies to manage population growth, particularly for families with limited resources. In addition, she urged the construction of schools within these communities to reduce dropout rates, which often result from students having to walk long distances to access education.

To combat youth unemployment, Shamima advocated for the creation of local industries and vocational programs. She noted that trades such as shea butter processing and weaving can be easily taught through community cooperatives, providing opportunities for those without formal education. The National Apprenticeship Program, she added, will register young people at the district level to equip them with practical skills and sustainable livelihoods.
