Jessica Opare-Saforo, Ghanaian broadcaster, voice-over artiste and TV host has propounded the subject of who is really deserving of the ‘celebrity’ tag.
She said most showbiz personalities referred to as celebrities do not deserve to be labeled as such.
She noted that real celebrities have a great influence that endears them to everyone.
She mentioned Shatta Wale as one of the very few celebrities in Ghana now.
“There are very few celebrities in Ghana. A true celebrity can’t step out on the street without being mobbed by fans. And in Ghana one person we can call ‘celebrity’ is Shatta Wale. Let him step out and see how many people will follow him. That is a celebrity,” she noted.
Jessica further stated that in recent times, anybody who speaks on radio or appears on television a few times bestows the celebrity status on themselves.
This situation she says reveals a diversion from the real idea of who a celebrity is.
This has been a debatable topic over the years in the Ghanaian showbiz, especially with the emanation of social media and the overwrought endeavour by certain people to be famous.
Shatta Wale is one of the musicians in Ghana who has a large following in the music industry.
He has endeared himself to music fans with hit songs, unconstrained sense of humour and consistent controversies.
