Silverbird explains why ‘Kumawood’ movies are less in the cinemas

Business Manager at the Silverbird Cinemas, Ghana, Nana Yaw, has explained why there are more ‘Ghallywood’ movies showing at the cinemas than ‘Kumawood’ movies as some Ghanaians would call it.

Ghallywood refers to the type of Ghanaian movies that feature film stars like Yvonne Nelson, Jackie Appiah, Adjetey Annan and the likes, while Kumawood features the likes of Agya Koo, Akrobeto, and Nana Ama McBrown among others. One could also say that Ghallywood produces the modern world type of Ghanaian movies while Kumawood produces local Ghanaian movies.

In an interview with Doctar Cann on Happy FM’s Showbiz Xtra, Nana Yaw said among the two categories of movies produced in Ghana, Ghallywood are mostly showed at the cinemas. He explained “I don’t know if it’s because they live in Accra, but we have a lot of producers from Accra bringing their movies to Silverbird as compared to the Kumawood movies as you’d put it. Maybe they also have their own avenues or locations for premiering these movies”.

He clarified that they do show Kumawood movies, however, it is a fact that the Ghallywood movies are more than the former.

Nana Yaw assured that the Silverbird Cinemas are always open to premiere or show Kumawood movies as and when the producers bring them in.
