Sports Minister reveals ex-Black Stars coaches C.K Akonnor and Milo Rajevac are still owed

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif has revealed that former Black Stars coaches, Milovan Rajevac and Charles Kwablan Akonnor are still owed arrears for their time with the national team.

Milovan Rajevac’s second spell as head coach of the senior national team, Black Stars in September 2021 during the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup did not go as planned despite guiding the team to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Black Stars exited at the group stage.

Milovan replaced Akonnor who was the head coach of the team before being shown the exit after the Black Stars’ defeat to South Africa in the qualifiers.

According to reports, Akonnor demanded his salary arrears owed after leaving his role nearly two years ago.

The former Asante Kotoko coach was appointed as the replacement for James Kwesi Appiah in 2020 on a two-year deal but was sacked four months before the end of his contract due to a poor run of performances.

Mustapha Ussif has however admitted there is still an amount owed despite making an initial payment.

In a press briefing, he said, “We still owe Milovan. Both C.K and Milovan, once their contract was terminated, we sat with them, negotiated their exit and C.K was paid $100,000 immediately after the negotiation same as Milovan”.

“We still owe both of them and we have payment scheduled which I will admit we have not followed because of constraints of funds. As and when we get funds, we will be paying the two coaches.

He also added that both coaches have planned to take the matter to court.

“Both of them have written to the Ghana Football Association threatening to go to court. We have appealed to them that we are committed to making sure we settle whatever we have agreed with them.”

Chris Hughton currently heads the Black Stars since taking over from Otto Addo who led the team to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
