Telecel Ghana Champions Sustainability with Upcycling Workshop on World Sustainability Day

Telecel Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible business practices with a practical sustainability and upcycling workshop for employees to mark World Sustainability Day 2025.

Organized through the Telecel Ghana Foundation and under the organization’s Environmental Responsibility purpose pillar, the workshop exposed employees to practical sustainable living techniques, including waste segregation, upcycling, and the importance of adopting circular economy practices.

Participants also gained insights into key sustainability principles such as Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, energy efficiency, and the management of plastic and electronic waste within business operations.

Held in partnership with McKingtorch Africa, the session moved beyond theory into action. Employees used discarded materials to create functional, eco-friendly products, converting recycled plastic waste into a custom-built bench for the Telecel office and crafting tabletop potted plants to take back to their workspaces. The experience demonstrated how everyday choices and small, consistent actions can lead to long-term positive environmental outcomes.
Komla Buami, Director for External Affairs at Telecel Ghana, highlighted the importance of individual action in driving collective impact. “Sustainability happens when individuals choose to act. Every small, consistent step from our employees brings us closer to the future we envision, a cleaner, greener, more responsible world.”

World Sustainability Day, observed annually on the last Wednesday of October, highlights the global call to protect the planet and preserve its resources for future generations. Telecel Ghana’s involvement aligns with its Purpose-Led Pillars, Environmental Responsibility and Sustainable Society, which guide the company’s ESG strategy.

The workshop adds to Telecel Ghana’s year-round environmental initiatives. Earlier in April, the organization marked Earth Day with an internal webinar that equipped employees with practical insights on sustainable living, from reducing waste and conserving energy, to adopting eco-friendly habits that contribute to a healthier environment. In June, employees planted 13,000 tree seedlings (10,000 in Accra’s Chipa Forest Reserve and 3,000 in Kumasi’s
South Formangso Reserve) in partnership with the Forestry Commission as part of the national Green Ghana “Tree for Life” afforestation programme.

Beyond these programs, Telecel Ghana continues to advance energy management interventions, including transitioning key infrastructure such as data centres to solar power.

Through these efforts, Telecel Ghana is empowering employees to become sustainability champions, at work, at home, and in their communities. The organization’s ongoing initiatives support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Telecel Ghana remains committed to integrating sustainable practices across its operations and leveraging partnerships, innovation, and employee volunteerism to drive environmental impact and community transformation.
