The Shipi of Tema Nii Armah Somponu II, has called on the government to release unused lands in the municipality back to the traditional stool.
According to him despite the existence of numerous companies on their land, there is still a high rate of unemployment in the area.
Nii Somponu II observed that the traditional occupation of Ga’s was originally farming and fishing but their lands were taken over by the numerous industries in Tema making life unbearable for the indigenes.
“We have Valco, GPHA and other big companies on our land but no indigenous work there. These industries survive at the expense of our traditional existence, yet we benefit nothing from them” he said.
Meanwhile, as the country is entering the election year, the Shipi of Tema has urged political leaders to commit themselves to maintain peace and security. He also called on the journalist to be circumspect in their reportage.
“We are entering into an election year and all emphasis must be on how to maintain peace. The journalist should also be very careful with whatever they put on the airwaves so they don’t incite the general public”.
