The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of TUC (GH) (TEWU) has officially declared its solidarity with the ongoing strike in public universities, aligning itself with the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG).

The decision to join the nationwide strike, effective immediately, stems from the union’s concerns regarding the non-payment of Tier 2 pension contributions and the restoration of agreed-upon allowances.

In a press release issued today, TEWU of TUC (GH) emphasized that the demands for Tier 2 pension payments and the restoration of allowances were among the issues outlined in petitions submitted to the National Labour Commission (NLC) in October 2023. These issues, if left unaddressed, could have led to another joint non-teaching staff unions’ strike in public universities.

The union expressed frustration with the perceived lethargy of government agencies in addressing labor-related concerns and noted that the patience of university workers had worn thin.

TEWU of TUC (GH) is now urging its members in public universities to participate in the ongoing strike to press for their demands, particularly the non-payment of Tier 2 pension contributions by the government, which has been outstanding for nine months.

In a strong call to action, TEWU of TUC (GH) is demanding that the government promptly settles the nine months’ arrears of Tier 2 pension contributions for workers in public universities to ensure a dignified retirement for its members.

The union’s statement concludes by serving notice that TEWU has officially joined the strike declared by SSA-UoG. It is hoped that the government agencies will respond swiftly to address these concerns, preventing disruptions to the academic calendar in Ghana’s public universities.
