The Environmental and Sanitation Office of Awutu Senya East has arrested and arraigned three individuals before the Akweley District Court for violating sanitation laws.

According to Paa Kwesi Asiedu, Environmental Health Officer in Charge of Prosecution, the offences included open wastewater disposal, illegal dumping and burning of refuse, and the use of pit latrines.

The accused had previously ignored invitations from sanitation officers as well as court summons, prompting their arrest under a bench warrant.

At the hearing, presided over by Her Ladyship Mrs. Annie Adobor, two of the suspects, Ebenezer Otto and Margaret Yeboah were charged. Otto, accused of dumping and burning waste in the open, pleaded guilty and was granted bail of GH¢20,000 with two sureties. Her case was adjourned to September 29, 2025, to allow her to register with a certified waste management company.

Margaret Yeboah, charged with using a pit latrine, pleaded not guilty. She was granted bail of GH¢20,000 with one surety, and is expected to reappear in court on October 10, 2025.

The third accused, Abdul Aziz, was charged with discharging wastewater in the open but was acquitted and discharged.

Prosecutor Asiedu cautioned residents that the Town Council (“Tankass”) remains active and warned that anyone found flouting sanitation regulations will face prosecution. He also highlighted challenges faced by municipal sanitation officers and appealed for stronger logistical support to enhance enforcement.

He also outlined some challenges facing sanitation officers in the municipality and called for greater support to enhance their effectiveness.
