The Minority has voiced strong opposition to the recent proposal of amendments to the road traffic regulations legislative instrument, introduced by the Minister of Transport in Parliament on Friday, June 14, 2024.
According to the Minority, the amendments which were proposed by Kwaku Ofori Asiamah to parliament, were to take effect within the Road Trafffic regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).
The minority in a letter issued on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 defined the purpose of the regulations as one which will update the Road Trafffic regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), on matters regarding registration and licensing of motor vehicles.
The letter also hinted that section of this amendment included granting certain public officials the privilege to use sirens on the road and freely exceed vehicle speed limits.
Controversies erupting even before the report of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, as stated by the Minority, evidently notes that the amendment does not hold the interest of the public paramount and must be duly opposed. The government was also urged by the minority to channel its attention to more issues relevant to the safety and wellbeing of the public and Ghana’s economy. “The report of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee is yet to be brought to the floor for debate and discussion. However given the sentiments expressed so far, Members of the NDC Minority Caucus wish to make it abundantly clear that we stand with the Ghanaians public on this issue and wish to signal our opposition to the amendment without any reservations.” Parts of the letter stated.
In their stance, the Minority has hereby called upon the Minister of Transport to withdraw the said Legislative instrument before it matures into law after 21 sitting days.
