UEFA: Man United fined for minor breach of FFP rules

Manchester United have been fined 300,000 euros (£257,000) by UEFA for a “minor” breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

The club were among several others sanctioned by UEFA under the FFP rules that were in place between 2019 and 2022.

In response to the fine, Manchester United expressed their disappointment with the outcome but accepted the penalty. They stated that the fine was for a “minor technical breach” of the previous Financial Fair Play rules as acknowledged by UEFA.

The club further explained that the punishment was due to a change in the way UEFA adjusted for losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic during the 2022 reporting period. This adjustment allowed only 15 million euros of the 281 million euros of pandemic-related revenue losses to be recognized within the FFP calculation.

In addition to Manchester United, Barcelona was also fined 500,000 euros (£428,000) by UEFA. The governing body found Barcelona guilty of “wrongly reporting profits on disposal of intangible assets (other than player transfers) which are not a relevant income under the regulations” in 2022.

AC Milan, Besiktas, Inter Milan, Marseille, Monaco, Paris St-Germain, and Roma were found to have complied with the FFP rules in 2022. However, UEFA stated that it will continue to monitor their compliance with the settlement agreement in the upcoming season.
