Director of Sports at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr Bella Bello Bitugu has asserted that the right way for sports to function and thrive is for the various sports disciplines to work with academia.

He indicated that academia can feed the sports sector with what to do and the right way of doing things to enhance performance and effectiveness.

According to him, no one has explored how academia and sports can work together and that “is the unfortunate thing. And it is what I have learnt from Ghana.”

He made this statement in a special COVID-19 series on Happy 98.9 FM’s Happy Sports with astute journalists, Ohene Brenya Bampoe of HappyFM and Willy Graham of GTV Sports+ dubbed: “Effects of COVID-19 on Least Financed Sports in Ghana.”

Dr. Bello motioned that with academia conducting research, for the sports fraternity, it can help increase performance in various areas and boost overall player and athlete output which can increase the export of our talent and further enrich local tournaments.

“Academia feeds the industry with psychology and marketing. And with a symbiotic relationship between the two, it will be easy to make sports more effective.”

He believes if the right thing is done, the Ghana sports industry will thrive.
