The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is taking a bold stance against illegal mining, declaring an indefinite strike across all 15 UTAG branches, starting today, October 10, 2024. This decision comes despite Organised Labour’s suspension of their planned strike after the government pledged to address the issue.

UTAG members overwhelmingly supported the motion to strike, with 77.95% (2,153 votes) in favor, 21.98% (607 votes) agaisnt and 0.07% (2 votes) abstaining, following a referendum on Wednesday, October 9.

In a press statement, the association demands the government formally announce a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting activities in protected areas, including forest reserves, farmlands, and water bodies.

UTAG’s move aims to pressure the government to take decisive action against galamsey, which has severely impacted Ghana’s environment. With this strike, UTAG becomes a leading force in the fight against galamsey, adding significant pressure on the government to act.

UTAG’s determination to push for change highlights the urgency of addressing galamsey’s devastating effects on Ghana’s water bodies and forests.
