Former President and 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama led a delegation from the opposition to Parliament.
The group including the party’s Chairman, Asiedu Nketia and the National Communication Officer Sammy Gyamfi among other prominent executives made an immaculate appearance in Parliament today in solidarity with Hon. James Gyakye Quayson’s swearing-in as Assin North MP after he was re-elected.
The Minority in Parliament was clad in all white on Tuesday, July 4 when the Member of Parliament-elect of Assin North Constituency in the Central Region was sworn in.
James Gyakye Quayson swore the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament as administered by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
However, the swearing-in ceremony was met with controversy after the Majority caucus in Parliament failed to show up making the swearing-in uncertain.
The Minority Caucus nonetheless had all its members present. The legitimacy of the process is questioned as the nation awaits the majority’s return, adding suspense to this political moment.
During the by-election on Tuesday, June 27, Mr Gyakye Quayson beat Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) to reclaim the seat.
His votes margin as compared to the 2020 results is over 1,300. In that election, Mr Gyakye Quayson polled 17,498 votes to beat NPP’s Abena Durowaa Mensah, who polled 14,193.
Mr Gyakye Quayson, who was declared invalidly elected in 2020 by a Supreme Court judgement, will return to take his seat in Parliament.
