The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has raised concern over possible cancellations of some 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers following reports of widespread examination malpractices.

WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, John Kapi, revealed that 25 individuals have been arrested for engaging in various forms of misconduct during the examination.

Those arrested include supervisors, headmasters, teachers, and invigilators.

“These are not just isolated cases. We’re talking about people in positions of trust trying to cheat the system,” Mr. Kapi said.

According to him, investigations uncovered incidents where some individuals attempted to answer questions on behalf of candidates or distributed pre-solved answers.

Others were found with photos of exam questions on their phones, allegedly sent to accomplices outside the centres.

WAEC is also probing a viral video in which a student praises certain invigilators for allegedly assisting them during the exams. The Council has promised to act if the claims are confirmed.

Mr. Kapi emphasized that any paper proven to have been compromised will be cancelled, stressing WAEC’s commitment to upholding the credibility of the examination process.
