Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has suggested a review of Ghana’s retirement age, currently set at 60, to align with the country’s economic capacity and labor market needs.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 30, he emphasized the need for a national consensus on any adjustments to the policy.

He stressed that broad and inclusive discussions would be essential in shaping the future of Ghana’s workforce.

“There’s a lot of talk about increasing the retirement age—some suggest 65 years, others even 70 years. If they are still strong, why should they retire? However, this decision must result from a harmonious and collective agreement” he mentioned.

Dr. Pelpuo voiced his support for a review, emphasizing that it should take into account the nation’s economic readiness and ability to implement the change effectively.
