A French tourist has been arrested after a British holidaymaker claimed she had been raped on a beach in Magaluf.

The 22-year-old Briton said her alleged attacker had threatened to drown her in the sea if she resisted, according to sources close to the investigation.

Local reports said the French tourist had filmed the alleged attack and posted footage on Snapchat – but he later told officers no filming had taken place and claimed that they had ‘consensual sex’.

The pair were staying at the same four-star hotel at the Majorca resort and are said to have got to know each other as the British woman celebrated a girlfriend’s birthday party in one of the rooms.

The French tourist is understood to have been with friends in a neighbouring room.

Island paper Ultima Hora said the pair had consensual sex at first after heading to the beach following their Wednesday night get-together.

But sources close to the investigation said this morning that the Briton said she had agreed to buy some takeaway food in Magaluf and go to the beach with the French man, but was allegedly raped after they laid down in a hammock and is insisting she never agreed to have sex with him.

The sources also confirmed local reports the British woman had alleged in a statement the Frenchman had threatened to drown her in the sea if she resisted.

Local reports said he had filmed the alleged attack and posted footage on Snapchat – but had insisted to officers after his arrest no filming had taken place and the light on his mobile was on only because he had wanted to see the British woman while they had ‘consensual sex’.

Civil Guard sources were unable to confirm the reports but said they had confiscated a mobile the Frenchman, also aged 22, had on him.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard said: ‘A French national has been arrested on suspicion of raping a British woman on the beach in Magaluf.’

The alarm was raised around 3.30am yesterday. The suspect appeared before an investigating judge yesterday afternoon in a closed court hearing.

It was not immediately clear if he had been remanded in prison pending an ongoing court probe, or released on bail.

The whereabouts of the woman, who was taken to the hospital for a routine examination, is not yet known.
