Wrong story telling corroding Ghanaian culture – Ghana Writers Association

Deputy Organizer for the Ghana Association of Writers, Rebecca Abafum, has disclosed that the present day Ghanaian environment and demand of readers, is undermining the culture of Ghana and Africa as a whole.

Although publishers and writers are working judiciously to spread and promote the Ghanaian culture, forces fighting against them prove far more superior.

In a special discussion as part of the e.tv Ghana ‘Made In Ghana Month’ on the topic; ‘The Future of Storytelling in Ghana,’ with Fati Shaibu Ali, she said, “It is difficult to give a straight forward answer to this topic but to be diplomatic, we are not telling the right stories but then it doesn’t mean to say efforts are not being put in place to preserve storytelling.

But then again if I have to be real with the answer then we are not telling the right stories.”

According to her, the wrong stories being told inherently affect the culture of Ghana. To her, the culture of Ghana will then not portray the culture of Ghana as it should be.

Until joining the Ghana Association of Writers and publishing her stories, Rebecca Abafum believed writers suffered criticisms because they refused to do the right thing.

She however explained that until writers received the necessary support and demand is skewed towards content on the African culture, “our fears may be realized.”
