An armed group has launched yet another deadly attack on United Nations peacekeepers in the Central African Republic (CAR), killing one and injuring another.
The fallen peacekeeper, identified as a Zambian national, was part of the UN’s MINUSCA mission working to restore peace in the conflict-hit country.
According to a statement from the United Nations, the assault took place in the northern part of CAR near the border with Sudan and is believed to have been carried out by suspected Sudanese armed groups. The second peacekeeper, also wounded during the strike, is currently receiving medical attention.
Zambia’s Foreign Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, has strongly condemned the attack and is calling for swift investigations to bring those responsible to justice.
This marks the third organized assault on UN peacekeepers by rebel fighters in CAR in recent times. “The members of the Security Council expressed their deep concern over the increasing number of attacks against peacekeepers in the Central African Republic,” said the Office of the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General
