Kenneth Kuranchie, managing editor of the Searchlight Newspaper, says Ghanaians have not derived any benefit from Democracy. ‘’ People living in Pokuase, Prampram and other villages around the country have they benefited from democracy?’’ he quizzed.
Speaking to Kwame Afrifa Mensah on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’, he said ‘’ instead of relevant journalism, journalists are interested in pitching politicians against each other. Asiedu Nketia has said this so they call the NPP General secretary to respond. That is not progress.’’
He further buttressed the point that democracy has not benefitted the ordinary Ghanaian by saying that ‘’ go to the Italian Embassy, Chinese Embassy or other Embassies across the country and see the number of young Ghanaians who want to run away from Ghana and seek greener pastures elsewhere.’’
He encouraged the media to take up its role and function as the Fourth Estate of the realm and shape society like it is meant to do.
‘’Foreign Journalists came to cover child labour in the cocoa industry. While same thing is happening here in Ghana. You only hear fake pastors and their fake prophecies on radio’’
He however believes that there is nothing wrong with politicians owning media houses. ‘’If a media house affiliates itself with a particular political party and so it is sympathetic towards them, there is nothing wrong with that. The problem is when media houses fabricate total lies and circulate it, that is what is bad.’’
He was appointed to represent President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the National Media Commission Board. To replace the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Junior, who represented former President John Mahama on the commission’s board.
