Statistician claims election data presented by media flawed

Statistician and lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Biostatistics department, Dr. Justice Mosses K. Aheto has claimed that the media’s coverage of the 2020 general elections was not objective.

According to him, the media did a lazy job and were not the primary source of the election results from the various constituencies they churned out.

He believes had the media been independent in the collection of data and results from the various polling stations, they would have noticed some discrepancies in the data presented by the Electoral Commission  (EC).

He made this assertion in an interview with Happy 98.9FM’s Samuel Eshun, host of the Happy Morning Show aired on e.TVGhana and Happy 98.9FM.

“The majority of media houses in the country were reporting figures taken from a singular source. The media houses were being fed by a single source this election and did not do their due diligence”, he said.

He asserted that the media was fed misleading data by a state institution which he refused to disclose. “And this has legal implications on the country”, he said.

Dr. Aheto believes the media would have done right by Ghanaians even if they had reported twenty percent (20%) of results they witnessed first-hand.

“The best thing media houses could’ve done was be on the ground and observe the election. Even if they could get only twenty percent of the data, they should’ve said that instead of using data they were fed with by one source only”, he sated.

Dr. Aheto who is contesting the 2020 election results published by the EC claims there are some discrepancies in the actual results on the ground than what was declared by the Commission.

He believes the total sum of results declared by the EC does not sum up to hundred percent (100%).
