President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that Ghana never experienced food shortages during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He attributes this situation to the numerous initiatives introduced into the agricultural sector by his Government.

Noting some of these initiatives, he mentioned the Planting for Food and Jobs, Rearing for Food and Jobs, One Village One Dam, One District, One Warehouse policy, among others.

Speaking at the State of the Nation Address of his second term in office the President stated: “I’m happy to announce to the house that during the pandemic, we have experienced no food shortages in this country.
There has been an increase in maize and rice yields by 110% and 48% respectively and we have, for the first time in a long while become a net exporter of food as opposed to the days of the importation of tomatoes and plantain.

Indeed in 2019, we exported some one hundred metric tons to our neighbours. We are determined to take full advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area to produce more in Ghana, to sell more to Africa and beyond as we move Ghana beyond aid”.

President Akufo-Addo delivered the first State of the Nation Address of his second term in office today. The President briefed the nation on the present state of the various sectors of the economy following his first term in office.
