A member of the communication team of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kafui Amegah has urged Ghanaians not to dwell on taxes included in the 2022 Budget Statement and rather focus on the benefits they will receive.
He posits that the 2022 ‘Agyenkwa’ Budget has come to save Ghanaians.
He expressed on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show hosted by Don Prah, “In all honesty, the Agyenkwa budget has come to save Ghanaians irrespective of the tax component that are in there. Gov’t has two major sources of income, namely generating income locally or borrowing from the international community. We feel that if we put our economy right at least by pinching ourselves to pay taxes, we will develop Ghana.”
Kafui was of the view that the NDC do not have the country at heart and therefore will do anything in their power to put the 2022 Budget in bad light. He noted that the Budget for example has introduced great initiatives such as the YouStart. However, the NDC has decided to trumpet the 1.75% e-levy as a draconian tax measure, which he believes should not be so.
The 2022 Budget Statement brought a lot of drama in parliament as the minority rejected the budget only for the majority to approve it on a different day.
Following the rejection of the budget, however, the minority highlighted five issues it wants a revised 2022 budget to address before it gives its support.
Among the recommendations the minority in parliament gave to government, it suggested that government suspend the E-Levy and properly engage stakeholders to agree on a reasonable policy.
The minority also asked government to incorporate in its revised Budget adequate measures to address the issue relating to the Tidal Waves Disaster in Keta and other communities.
Subsequently, the Finance Minister Ofori-Atta made budgetary allocations to complete feasibility studies for the coastal communities that have been affected by the tidal waves.
However, he has said that proceeds from the 1.75% E-levy will support entrepreneurs and ensure that over 11 million jobs are created for the youth in the country. Hence, any attempt to evade the e-levy proposed by government will be blocked.
