Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam, says Ghana’s flooding situation can only be curbed if structures erected in waterways are pulled down regardless of its owners.
He argues the comfort of a few who deem themselves as privileged cannot be prioritized over that of the majority Ghanaians.
According to him, the government and responsible authorities do not need a legislative instrument to pull down these structures which have been built in water ways.
Parts of Accra were submerged in water after torrential rains on Saturday, May 21, 2022, disrupting traffic flow in some areas.
Some major roads were flooded, making it difficult for motorists to ply the road, leaving commuters stranded.
Flooding often affects low-lying Accra and its environs, partly due to poor drainage systems and behavior of Ghanaians.
Andy Kankam reacting to the flooding in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Editors’ Take discussion on the Happy Morning Show said, “We need to pull down buildings in water ways. No matter whose building it is we need to pull it down. We can’t let a few enjoy their lives and live happily at the expense of others. We need to pull them down and we don’t need any Legislative Instrument to do that. We need to do this and do it quickly.”
Aside from pulling down structures in waterways, the editor also called on the government to invest in proper drains. “After the gov’t does this, we as citizens must also know that the drains are not our refuse dumps. Both the state and citizens must approach this matter with all seriousness. The state must provide the people with the necessary platforms to help them.”
