Ghanaian politician and lawyer, Nana Obiri Boahene, posits former President John Dramani Mahama can be cited for contempt over recent comments against the judiciary.

Former President John Dramani Mahama observed it would take a new chief justice to lead the process to repair what he says is the “badly dented image” of Ghana’s judiciary for people to win the trust in the system.

For him, the deteriorated image of the judiciary quickly sparks laughter from the citizenry when one decides to go to the court for justice.

Former President Mahama made the statement at the opening of the 2nd Annual Lawyers Conference of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday, 28 August 2022.

Reacting to comments of the former President in an interview with Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show, Obiri Boahen said, “Comments of the former President falls under the definition of contemptuous statements. His comments are contemptuous and he can be cited for contempt.”

Describing comments of former President Mahama as unfortunate, Obiri Boahen reminded Ghanaians he (President Mahama) never doubted the image and reputation of the judiciary when he won the election petition in 2012, but now doubts them when things didn’t go his way.

“Former President Mahama’s comments are unfortunate and unpresidential. He makes it look like one has to pick up machetes, taking matters into their own hands instead of seeking redress in court,” he lamented.
