Asylum seekers reject pay to leave UK and go into hiding

By: Kobina Baidoo

The British authorities have begun a series of operations to detain asylum seekers who have gone into hiding from the custody of the UK Home Office.

The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act 2024 is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The act seeks to deter unlawful migration through illegal passages and routes, by legally sending some migrants to Rwanda.

Aljazeera confirms that the United Kingdom is set to pay asylum seekers whose applications have failed up to 3,000 British pounds to move to Rwanda.

The proposed resettlement scheme comes as part of a deal agreed upon by the two respective governments to clear a backlog of tens and thousands of asylum seekers who have been refused the right to stay but cannot be returned to countries deemed unsafe.

The UK Home Office in charge of immigration affairs of the United Kingdom, shared a video on X earlier this week showing armed immigration officers handcuffing individuals at their homes and escorting them into deportation vans. The post which was captioned, “The first people set to be removed to Rwanda have been detained.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, explained that his policy will deter people from crossing the English Channel in small boats and to tackle the issue of people-smuggling gangs.

The immigration policy The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act 2024, enacted in 2023 despite the many disagreements from the UK legislative system has reached its stage of enforcement which will see many migrants be transported to the East African country in the next to nine to eleven weeks
