The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has rejected claims that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is responsible for the strained relations between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

In a statement released on Saturday, August 10, 2024, the Ministry dismissed the allegations made by former President John Dramani Mahama, which suggested that President Akufo-Addo’s recent interactions with the U.S. government had negatively impacted diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Ministry emphasized that under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, Ghana has consistently worked to foster positive and respectful relations with all nations, including Burkina Faso.

It highlighted a ministerial visit to Burkina Faso in 2022 and a subsequent visit by President Akufo-Addo in 2023, both of which were met with high-level courtesies and reinforced the commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

The statement also stressed that President Akufo-Addo’s administration has been dedicated to diplomacy that upholds mutual respect and promotes peaceful engagement globally.

The Ministry called for efforts to build bridges and strengthen ties with Burkina Faso rather than spreading unfounded claims that could undermine international cooperation.

“The Ministry, therefore, calls for a focus on building bridges and strengthening ties with our neighbour rather than spreading falsehood that only serves to undermine the spirit of international cooperation,” the statement concluded.
