US President-elect Donald J. Trump has appointed Susie Wiles, his de facto campaign manager, as the incoming Chief of Staff for his administration.
Reports indicate that Wiles will make history as the first woman to hold the office of Chief of Staff in the United States. She is also the first of several key appointments that Trump is expected to announce soon to effectively manage the extensive federal government.
Wiles has received broad recognition within and beyond Trump’s inner circle for leading a highly disciplined and well-organized campaign, which is credited with securing his recent victory. Although she was seen as the top candidate for Chief of Staff, Wiles largely stayed out of the public eye, even declining to speak at Trump’s victory celebration early Wednesday morning. Throughout the campaign, she resisted taking the formal title of campaign manager, likely aiming to avoid the potential for turnover, given Trump’s history with that role.
Wiles will succeed Jeff Zients, known for his extensive experience in government, including service under the Obama administration. Despite Wiles’ experience in federal government matters, her close relationship with President-elect Trump is expected to be an asset in her new role.
