The 9th Parliament of Ghana, inaugurated early on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, has finalized the formation of its major committees, including the Appointments Committee, critical for vetting President John Dramani Mahama‘s ministerial nominees.

The Committee, made up of both Majority and Minority members, was officially constituted on January 8, 2025, following a meeting of the Committee of Selection. This process was guided by Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Orders, ensuring representation of diverse views within the House.

Chaired by Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, the Appointments Committee is responsible for vetting candidates for ministerial, ambassadorial, and other significant positions. The committee includes prominent figures such as Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (Vice Chairperson), Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Hon. Alexander K. Afenyo-Markin (Ranking Member), and Hon. Patricia Appiagyei (Deputy Ranking Member).

Their mandate is to conduct a thorough yet impartial vetting of President Mahama’s nominees, recognizing the urgency for the new administration to commence its duties promptly.

The Committee’s membership was structured in line with Standing Orders 216 and 217, ensuring balance and fair representation. The Speaker of Parliament stressed the importance of these appointments in promoting unity and effective governance.
