The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has targeted about three hundred thousand (300,000) persons aged one year and above for a cholera vaccination exercise within the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise, which will take place in the sub-metros of Ablekuma South, Okaikoi South, and Ashiedu Keteke, aims to complement efforts to control and contain the cholera outbreak in the country.

The four-day exercise is scheduled to start on Friday, 14th February, and run through Monday, 17th February. Since the outbreak of cholera in Ghana, over six thousand suspected cases have been recorded, with more than 500 confirmed. Greater Accra has reported the highest number of confirmed cases, with over 200, while the Effutu and Agona West districts in the Central Region remain cholera hotspots.

Following successful vaccination campaigns in the Western and Central regions, Greater Accra will be the latest region to participate in the exercise.

The Programme Manager for the Expanded Programme on Immunization, Dr. Kwame Achianno highlighted the effectiveness of the vaccine, noting that research indicates around 80 percent of individuals who carry the cholera germs show no symptoms, making vaccination crucial in protecting individuals from infection. He reassured the public that the vaccine is safe, and everyone aged one year and above, except pregnant women, is eligible.

He also emphasized the importance of media involvement in addressing the root causes of cholera by educating the public about cleanliness and sanitation practices, which play a significant role in controlling the disease.

All guardians are encouraged to ensure their children participate in this vital vaccination effort to help mitigate the ongoing cholera risk in the region.
