Renowned lawyer and activist, Martin L. Kpebu, ESQ, has formally written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Ghana Police Service seeking an update on the investigation and prosecution of Akonta Mining Limited and its Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The petition, also signed by another complainant Ing Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, alleges illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in violation of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and its subsequent amendment, Act 995.

According to the petition, Kpebu and his co-complainant initially reported the matter to the IGP on October 13, 2022. However, they claim that despite a meeting held in 2023 and a follow-up letter in 2024, they have received no substantial update on the case.

The petitioners express concerns that the case appears to be “unnecessarily stalling” and urge the police to provide them with updates on the progress of the investigation at the earliest possible time.
