The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned what it describes as state-sponsored harassment and intimidation of its members, calling on Ghanaians and democratic institutions to denounce these actions allegedly orchestrated by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 23, the NPP cited two incidents that they believe reflect a disturbing pattern of political persecution: the arrest of party member Mr. Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi,” and an aggressive police operation at the home of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to the statement signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, Mr. Kumi was forcibly arrested at approximately 7:00 AM at his residence by heavily armed, masked men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The NPP claims the officers wielded AK-47 rifles in what it described as a “brazen display of intimidation.”

The party connects Mr. Kumi’s arrest to his recent petition to President John Dramani Mahama, which called for the dissolution of a committee reviewing the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The NPP argues that instead of responding through legal means, the government chose to silence Mr. Kumi through force.

In another development, the party criticized the storming of Chairman Wontumi’s residence by armed men. This occurred despite Wontumi’s prior communication with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) that he would not be available until May 26, 2025, due to medical reasons. The CID had originally invited him for questioning on May 19.

The NPP is calling on all Ghanaians and defenders of democracy to condemn what it describes as political persecution being carried out under the current NDC-led administration.

This latest outcry adds to the growing political tension in the country, as opposition parties continue to express concern about the alleged misuse of security institutions for political gains.
